Adele @ The Warfield

January 2009 · 1 minute read

My mother was kind enough to buy me tickets for my birthday to see this artist I had never heard of Adele. As strange as it is to be introduced to music by my mother, she apparently has really good taste.

A brief selected history of Adele:

Jan 2008 – Signs with an indy label

May 2008 – Plays a show at Bimbo’s

~Oct 2008 – Books the Fillmore in SF

Oct 2008 – Plays on Saturday Night Live

Nov 2008 – Upgrades SF venue from Fillmore to Warfield due to popularity

Jan 2008 – Plays to a crowd of +2k people (and me)

Despite being very well produced, and certainly well handled by her people. Adele was genuinely shocked by her fame and response from her SF fans. Honestly, I thought she was going to cry a couple of times.

Highlight of the night: Playing her song ‘My Same’ rather than going straight into her single “Chasing Pavement” due to audience request. Her touring band just sat there, not having anything to do while she and her guitar playing side kick hashed out a song they clearly hadn’t played in a while. It was pretty impressive, especially since it’s probably one of my favorite songs of hers.
